Question

Is it possible that a 5-month-old baby who wakes up 4 or 5 times at night is suffering from a calcium deficiency? Before, when the baby was younger, they would only wake up once or twice a night. But recently, for the past month, the baby has been waking up 4 or 5 times, and they are particularly restless at night. I started giving my daughter Vitamin AD drops every day when she was a month old.

Answer

If a 5-month-old child is experiencing restless sleep again, it should be considered first that it might be due to a calcium deficiency. Because a decrease in the baby’s blood calcium levels can increase the excitability of the child’s brain and vegetative nervous system, causing the baby to be restless at night. You have already given the child oral VAD, so I suggest also giving the child oral calcium supplements (it is recommended to choose liquid calcium supplements as they are easier for children’s digestive absorption). I don’t know if the child has been given complementary foods; if so, I suggest increasing the consumption of calcium-rich foods such as milk, seaweed, shrimp shells, soy products, and animal bones.
