Question
My baby hasn’t had a bowel movement for three days, but he’s not crying or fussing, eats on schedule, and has never received any related treatment. I want to know the possible causes and get some help.
Answer
In cases of breastfeeding, it’s usually not a concern if an infant hasn’t had a bowel movement for three days. However, if the baby is on formula milk, the stool may become drier. If solid foods are being introduced, the stool may also become harder. Generally, if the baby is eating well, sleeping well, and there are no other abnormalities, there’s no need to worry too much. However, if the baby hasn’t had a bowel movement for more than three days, it’s advisable to consult a doctor for a check-up. In urgent situations, soap sticks or rectal suppositories can be used as a last resort, but this method is not recommended for regular use. It’s suggested that parents massage their baby’s abdomen daily to promote intestinal peristalsis and prevent constipation. If the baby’s stool is too hard or too runny, attention should be paid to the diet and the baby’s health condition should be observed.
