Question

I am feeding my baby a mix of breast milk and formula, adding about 100 milliliters of formula each afternoon. The baby’s stool is yellow with a sticky texture and contains white particles resembling small flower petals. The baby has bowel movements twice a day, occasionally more on some days. It’s usually two or three times a day. The baby has been on Aptamil for over a month and now I want to switch to HiPP. Is that okay? (I add formula each afternoon, about 100 milliliters.) How should I switch? Should I mix it in gradually or can I switch directly? Is the stool normal? Are there any signs of indigestion? How should I switch the formula? The baby’s weight gain is slow, averaging only half a pound per month. The baby doesn’t sleep much during the day, at most half an hour in the morning and half an hour in the afternoon. Is the slow growth related to sleep or formula? Or is it related to something else? How frequent are the bowel movements?

Answer

Generally speaking, for babies on mixed feeding, it’s normal for their stool to have occasional pieces. Two to three bowel movements a day are also normal. Good deep sleep for the baby is very important; if they sleep less during the day, they should sleep more at night. Start introducing the new formula milk gradually, and wait until the baby adjusts before switching brands. Generally, after six months, a baby’s weight should increase by about two pounds per month, which is normal. The above is my suggestion for the question “Is it normal for a baby over two months old to have milk curds in their stool?” I hope it helps you, and wish you and your baby good health!
