Question
My child, who is 4 years old, has been experiencing repeated episodes of fever over the past few days. The fever is the only symptom, and it occurs more frequently at night. The child has previously been treated for tonsillitis, with effective use of fever-reducing and anti-inflammatory medications, but this time the treatment is not working. I am seeking assistance on what to do when fever-reducing medication is ineffective?
Answer
If the child only shows signs of fever with no other abnormalities, the initial consideration is an acute upper respiratory infection. Currently, symptomatic treatment can be provided, and it is encouraged to use antiviral medications such as ribavirin and oral preparations of Huanglian. For high fever, fever-reducing medications like nimesulide can be used, as well as fever-reducing suppositories, patches, or physical cooling (cooling). Usually, symptoms can be alleviated. However, if the fever persists for a long time, consider conditions such as pneumonia and otitis media, and further examination for diagnosis is needed, along with additional treatment measures.
