Question

Does a child need surgery for enlarged tonsils? Thank you. Sometimes I snore. I don’t often have a fever or cold. It’s just that when I have a cold, taking some medicine helps.

Answer

When tonsils are overly enlarged and interfere with breathing, causing symptoms such as snoring, shortness of breath, or apnea during sleep, surgery should be considered. Additionally, if there are abnormalities such as keratosis, calculi, or tumors in the tonsils, or if systemic diseases such as myocarditis, nephritis, and rheumatic heart disease are caused by tonsillitis, the tonsils should also be considered for surgical removal.
