Question

My child has developed cold sores at the corners of their mouth. Initially, they were small and red, but now they’ve expanded like this, with purulent scabs that have formed and are getting bigger. Can I remove these yellowish scabs? I’ve been applying Acyclovir cream and taking Ribavirin granules.

Answer

Perioral dermatitis is a type of vesicular rash in the herpes simplex family, characterized by limited, raised lesions containing fluid-filled cavities. In addition to antiviral medication, it is recommended to also use Fucithromycin ointment topically and oral cephalexin for antibacterial treatment. Pay attention to daily hygiene, avoid touching with your hands frequently, drink plenty of water, wash your hands often, and use separate towels and utensils. After recovery, pay attention to eating more green leafy vegetables, moderate whole grains, prevent malnutrition, diversify your food sources, and get moderate sun exposure, as well as regular physical activity.
