Question

My baby is 1 month and 1 week old. She has a viral infection with fever and did not take antiviral medication before undergoing a bath. After two days of fever, the fever subsided, but she started coughing with phlegm immediately. The coughing was severe and continued for nearly a week before slightly improving. Unexpectedly, one night she had a fever again, reaching a high of 37.6°C. The fever subsided on the third morning, but the blood test still showed viral infection. Currently, the severe cough is affecting the baby’s deep sleep. What should parents do?

Answer

Based on the description, the baby may have viral bronchitis. It is recommended to increase fluid intake, adopt a light diet, and ensure adequate rest. Oral ambroxol solution can be administered to the baby, along with medication inhalation treatment. One dose of Benadryl can be given before bedtime. If the severe coughing symptoms do not improve, consider whether it might be a mycoplasma infection at this point, and in such cases, consider taking erythromycin-like antibiotics.
