Question
After receiving a Vitamin D injection, could I be experiencing symptoms of hypercalcemia? (Decreased appetite, not feeling like taking naps during the day, a bit of diarrhea, and not feeling like taking naps might be due to low calcium.)
Answer
Vitamin D injections may lead to hypercalcemia. Early symptoms include fatigue, weakness, lethargy, decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss. In severe cases, symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, thirst, polyuria, confusion, and even coma. Hypercalcemia is diagnosed when serum calcium levels fall below 2.75mmol/L. In cases of hypercalcemic crisis, patients may experience dehydration, low-grade fever, arrhythmia, and kidney and heart failure. In severe cases, it can be life-threatening.
