Question

My newborn is 12 days old and has a renal hydrops measuring 8mm. Is this serious? Will it gradually disappear? What kind of assistance is needed?

Answer

Ureteral obstruction can occur at any part of the urinary system, and it may be unilateral or bilateral, complete or incomplete. After a period of time, it can lead to hydronephrosis. Any obstruction in urine flow, whether due to narrow or blocked tubes or neuro-muscular dysfunction, can cause urinary tract obstruction, leading to renal hydrops, kidney enlargement, kidney parenchyma thinning, and ultimately kidney failure. In cases of bilateral ureteral obstruction, it may lead to uremia, with serious consequences.
