Question

I have previously undergone all tests, including the four-dimensional and NIPT, and everything was normal. But suddenly, during the late pregnancy period, the amniotic fluid increased significantly. Is there a high possibility of my baby having birth defects? Do I absolutely need to have an amniocentesis done?

Answer

Based on your description, the amniotic fluid index is 32cm, and the sudden and continuous increase in amniotic fluid is highly suspicious of fetal deformity.Brainwatering, fetal kidney and urinary system deformities could all lead to continuous increase in amniotic fluid. It is recommended that you have an amniocentesis done. NIPT mainly checks for 21-trisomy and neural tube defects, while four-dimensional ultrasound mainly examines the fetus’s heart and organ growth and development. However, with the growth of the fetus, there may be changes in growth and development. Good luck.
