Question
The 7-month-old baby fell off the bed on Monday and seemed fine at the time with no apparent redness or swelling on the head. The baby was in good spirits, able to eat and sleep well. However, by Thursday, the baby had started vomiting, and the parents were unsure if this was related to the fall?
Answer
Falling or falling out of bed is a common occurrence in infancy, and most cases are harmless with very few leading to brain injuries. It is recommended to closely observe the baby for 48 hours. If the baby shows no dry heaves, eats dinner and takes naps normally, is in good spirits, plays freely, does not twitch, there is generally no cause for concern. If the baby has many skin breaks, shows limb movement disorders, appears listless, has a blank expression, loses appetite, has a dry heave, irregular breathing, poor complexion, or even twitches, it is necessary to go to the hospital for a follow-up examination immediately. The doctor will suggest a detailed head CT scan to rule out brain injuries. A single CT scan will not have any adverse effects on the baby.
