Question

My baby is 11 months old and keeps scratching their ears. When I shine a flashlight, I can see a large piece of earwax blocking it, too deep to safely remove. Watching the child scratch their ears every day, they must be uncomfortable and very itchy. What should I do? I’m seeking the advice of a doctor, thank you.

Answer

The baby frequently scratches their ears and often scratches them until they bleed. It is considered that your baby’s ears must have some kind of condition. Ear discomfort in infants is often due to cerumen impaction, and it is more likely to cause ear fullness and itching after washing face or bathing. Otitis externa is also quite common, characterized by severe itching that is hard to bear. There is often recurrence of discharge, which dries up and forms yellow crusts. It is still recommended that you take your baby to an otorhinolaryngology department for a follow-up examination and have the doctor diagnose and treat accordingly.
