Question

Around 8 PM last night, my baby had a fever of 39 degrees Celsius. I gave him children’s Tylenol, and this morning his fever was up to 40.2 degrees Celsius. The doctor at the hospital said it was tonsillitis. He received a fever-reducing injection and intravenous fluids, and the fever went down, but it came back quickly. At around 1 PM today, I gave him more children’s Tylenol, and it worked again, but now it’s back up to 38.8 degrees Celsius. What’s going on? Should I take him back to the hospital? I’m in a hurry for an answer, thank you!

Answer

Considering your baby’s situation, we suspect there may be a relation to fever and infection. To diagnose whether it’s a bacterial or viral infection, an active laboratory examination is necessary. You can have a blood test to initially determine whether it’s a viral or bacterial infection. If it’s viral influenza, there is no specific effective medication; you can take ribavirin granules. If it’s a bacterial infection, taking azithromycin granules may help. It’s important to drink plenty of plain water. If necessary, you can take fever-reducing medication such as children’s Tylenol.
