Question
My newborn baby has recently been having bowel movements every three days. Each time, the amount is considerable, but the shape and color of the stool are still normal. Is this considered constipation? Should I massage my baby’s belly or give them probiotics?
Answer
If your baby has bowel movements every three days, this might be considered mild constipation. Breastfed babies usually have more frequent and looser bowel movements. In such cases, you can massage your baby’s abdomen 3 to 5 times a day, each session lasting 15 minutes. If your baby does not have abdominal pain and the stool is not too dry, there is no need to use a lubricant to help with defecation at this time. Additionally, be mindful not to keep the room too warm.
