Question

My daughter has tonsillitis and the doctor prescribed a pack of azithromycin granules and some Western medicine to be mixed together. The instructions are to take one dose of azithromycin per day, but today I was not around, and my husband gave her three doses in total, following the usual dosage. Is there any harm to the child’s body? She shows no unusual symptoms.

Answer

Personally, I believe that the maximum daily dose of azithromycin granules is 0.5g under normal circumstances. Azithromycin is mainly metabolized by bile (50%) and also a small amount is excreted in urine. Its toxic and side effects mainly accumulate in the liver. I suggest: first, discontinue azithromycin for at least 72 hours (the half-life of this drug is long, about 72 hours can be decomposed and metabolized), second, use a very small amount of licorice (not more than 10g) and mung beans to make a decoction, and drink plenty of water to accelerate decomposition and metabolism, third, it is recommended to go to the hospital for a detailed examination of serum amino transferase and other indicators.
