Question
My child is three years old and has suddenly stopped wanting to talk, doesn’t want to interact with others, and doesn’t play much with other children. However, at home, they still love talking to their grandparents. According to my child’s grandmother, after my child had an incident at school where they had an accident and ended up with feces on their pants, they have become reluctant to speak. I don’t know if this is related to the event. Have there been any previous treatment situations and what was the outcome? Are we worried about a genetic disease?
Answer
Children experience changes not only physically but also mentally as they grow. According to Erik Erikson’s stages of psychosocial development, children’s psychological development is divided into several stages. In your child’s current stage, the first stage (0-2 years) of trust versus mistrust, it is important to actively communicate with kindergarten teachers about your child’s situation, encourage and praise your child more in school, avoid discussing the incident with feces, and indirectly teach your child basic social skills such as how to report to the bathroom. Starting small can have a good effect.
