Question

Recently, my baby’s left eye has been watering excessively, along with discharge. Could you please tell me what might be causing this? Thank you. It seems to fit the symptoms of nasolacrimal duct obstruction. It’s likely to be this condition. Congenital blockage of the nasolacrimal duct is common in infants, while blockage due to trauma or infection around the eye is rare. Blockage caused by tumors pressing on the nasolacrimal duct nearby. Excessive tearing and discharge of mucus are common symptoms.

Answer

For excessive discharge, new mothers can use lint-free cotton soaked in warm water to clean their baby’s eyes twice a day, starting from the inner corner and moving to the outer corner, gently wiping each eye with two separate pieces of lint-free cotton. Local treatments such as medication application, cleaning, and probing can also be used.
