Question

My baby had a fever for two days and then the fever subsided, but she started coughing for the next two days without any energy, but no fever. The cough was quite severe, affecting her sleep. I took her to see the doctor in the afternoon, and she didn’t have a fever then. The blood test said it was a viral infection. After taking the medicine at home, she wanted to take a nap in the afternoon, but she had a fever again at night. She hasn’t had a fever for two days, but suddenly it came back, and she has taken two doses of fever-reducing medicine. Why is that? (Female, 2 years old)

Answer

Based on your description, your baby may have an upper respiratory infection which could lead to fever and coughing. Today, we conducted a blood test and lung examination at the hospital to rule out the possibility of bronchitis. Usually, during the early stages of infection, body temperature may fluctuate repeatedly. I suggest you treat the symptoms accordingly; if the temperature is below 38.5 degrees Celsius, you can use fever-reducing medicine and a warm water bath to lower the temperature, and give your baby symptomatic pulmonary expectorant medication. Also, ensure your baby drinks plenty of water, consumes easily digestible and light food, avoids contact with cold patients, and keeps warm to prevent catching a cold again.
