Question
My baby is almost four months old and has been having diarrhea, sometimes even with traces of blood. Can they take probiotics? How should they be supplemented? They’ve had diarrhea since birth, and I don’t know why. My baby was born via cesarean section.
Answer
Infant diarrhea is a disease caused by a variety of different pathogens and reasons, most commonly affecting infants under 2 years old, particularly those between 6 to 11 months of age. The peak period for vomiting usually occurs from June to September and October to January of the following year. Diarrhea in the summer is often caused by bacterial infections, with discharge being mucoid and having a foul smell; in the fall, diarrhea is more commonly caused by rotavirus, with stools being loose or pasty but without a foul smell. If your baby only has vomiting without other symptoms, such as crying and fussiness, then there is no need to worry.
