Question
The baby is three months old. Last night, the baby was hit hard on the head by the father. Today, the baby is in good spirits, but there are occasional head movements and hand-holding. Should the baby be taken to the hospital immediately?
Answer
Falling or being knocked over are common occurrences in infancy, and most cases are not serious. It is recommended to observe the baby closely for 48 hours. If the baby shows no vomiting, is in good spirits, plays normally, and does not have seizures, there is generally no cause for concern. If symptoms such as limb movement disorders, listlessness, or loss of appetite occur, immediate medical attention should be sought for a detailed CT scan of the skull to rule out brain injury. A detailed CT scan will not have any adverse effects on the baby.
