Question

Many bleeding spots have appeared on my feet again. What are the side effects of prednisone tablets?

Answer

Prednisone tablets, also known as corticosteroids, require extreme caution when used long-term in children, as hormones can inhibit growth and development. Oral medium-dose therapy can reduce the inhibitory effect on growth. Children or adolescents on long-term use of corticosteroids must be closely monitored, as the risk of osteoporosis, ischemic necrosis of the femoral head, glaucoma, and cataracts increases. The dosage of hormones used in children should not only be based on age and weight but also on the severity of the disease and the child’s response to treatment. For children with adrenal cortical insufficiency, the dosage of hormones should be determined based on body surface area, as it is more prone to overdose when based on weight, especially in infants and children who are short or overweight.
