Question
I have a three-month-old baby with three soft lumps in the scrotum, visible besides the testicles when the scrotum is relaxed. I didn’t notice them for some time and only discovered them recently. Is this hydrocele? Do I need to undergo drainage treatment?
Answer
Hydrocele is a common condition characterized by an excessive accumulation of fluid in the tunica vaginalis. The goal of surgical treatment is to perform high-positioned drainage, to cut off the downward flow of abdominal fluid, and to reduce the occurrence of hydrocele. Possible reasons for recurrence after surgery include misdiagnosis, failure to perform high-positioned drainage, or incomplete removal of multilocular hydroceles. The prognosis is good, but one should be aware of the possibility of recurrence after surgery.
