Questions

A 2-month-old baby often has eye discharge and tears. What assistance is needed? Is this normal? How can it be resolved? Can eye drops be used?

Answers

The tears produced in a baby’s eyes may accumulate in the tiny tubes between the eyes and nose due to underdeveloped tear ducts, leading to eye discharge and tears. This is usually not caused by infection. You do not need to put eye drops in the baby’s eyes; simply gently clean the baby’s eyes with warm water daily. To prevent secondary infection, you can use warm, diluted saltwater for cleaning.
