Question

A three-month-old baby often spits up milk, has been coughing occasionally lately, and the head shakes from time to time.

Answer

This could be due to physiological spitting up, which might also lead to lung infection and coughing. Treatment should first address fever, and anti-inflammatory therapy is suggested. Fever can sometimes exacerbate the symptoms of spitting up. Additionally, since the infant’s esophageal function is not fully developed, vigorous movement or coughing after feeding may cause vomiting. Do not overfeed during each feeding session; after breastfeeding, hold the baby upright and gently pat the back to help expel excess air. Relax after feeding and be gentle when placing the baby down. It is advisable to let the baby sleep on their side; in case of vomiting, quickly lower the head to allow the baby to spit out, preventing aspiration into the respiratory tract, which could lead to aspiration pneumonia or even breathing difficulties and life-threatening situations. Generally, physiological spitting up will gradually improve after 4-6 months.
