Question

My child is two months old. Their eyes always have tears. There’s also yellowish eye mucus. My child is two months old and their eyes keep discharging tears. It’s only one eye affected, and it’s so bad that they can’t open their eyes. The eyes are also a bit swollen. I feel that it’s better when the room is cooler, as heat seems to make it worse. The hospital said it’s an inflammation and prescribed eye drops, but they don’t seem to be working. What disease does my child have, and how should it be treated?

Answer

Based on your description, your child may have dacryocystitis. It is recommended to first try lacrimal sac massage. The method is to use your thumb to gently press upwards from the inner corner of the eye along the bridge of the nose towards the nostril with slight force, doing this five times a day, each time for five presses. If massage does not work, it is suggested to undergo lacrimal duct probing at three months of age, as the lacrimal points will be sufficiently large for cleaning and probing at this time, and the child’s struggle will be less intense, making the operation relatively easier.
