Question

Is vitamin K deficiency related to breastfeeding? My baby is 40 days old and has intracranial hemorrhage. The doctor said it was due to a lack of vitamin K. Does this mean that newborns should not breastfeed but should consume formula instead? Can a newborn with vitamin K deficiency receive a vaccine? Since vaccines can easily cause skin breakdown. I’m currently preparing to have another baby, and I’m always a bit worried.

Answer

Is vitamin K deficiency related to breastfeeding? Vitamin K deficiency, also known as acquired hypoprothrombinemia, refers to a condition where the activity of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors is impaired due to a lack of vitamin K, which can be corrected by vitamin K. It is mostly caused by insufficient intake of vitamin K during pregnancy, and newborns from 2 to 7 days old may experience vitamin K deficiency leading to skin breakdown due to the depletion of vitamin K stores, insufficient intake, and endogenous obstacles.
