Question

My baby has a bit of a severe calcium deficiency. What can I eat to supplement it? Do I need to take cod liver oil at the same time? If so, when should cod liver oil be taken in relation to calcium supplementation? Can calcium be taken on an empty stomach? How soon after breastfeeding should I supplement calcium? The child is breastfed, and has previously used Jiajia Calcium, but now the doctor recommends using calcium gluconate. But I’m not sure if I still need to take cod liver oil. I hope to get some assistance with this.

Answer

Calcium gluconate is easily absorbed by the body and is therefore recommended. However, cod liver oil can also promote the supplementation of calcium and vitamin D. If the dose of calcium gluconate is large, taking cod liver oil simultaneously may lead to hypercalcemia. If cod liver oil is taken without a doctor’s permission, the dose of calcium gluconate should be appropriately reduced. It is recommended to supplement calcium half an hour after breastfeeding and get plenty of sunlight to promote the production of vitamin D, which helps in the absorption of calcium.
