Question

How is puerperal infection caused?

Answer

Puerperal infection can be caused by either external or internal infections. External infections occur when there is contact with contaminated items such as clothes, utensils, and surgical instruments. Internal infections are due to pathogens in the pregnant woman’s reproductive tract. Not only can these pathogens lead to puerperal infection, but they can also indirectly affect the fetus, leading to adverse outcomes such as miscarriage, preterm birth, or stillbirth. If a woman has vaginal or cervical inflammation during pregnancy, it may also lead to puerperal infection postpartum. Internal infections are an important cause of puerperal infection.
