Question

A 45-day-old infant still has jaundice under the eyes and on the face, is it pathological jaundice?

Answer

Breastfed infants may experience a recurrence of jaundice between 4 to 7 days after birth, peaking at 2 to 4 weeks (serum bilirubin levels may be below 256.6 to 342.0μmol/L), and generally remain in good condition without signs of hemolysis or anemia. Jaundice may last for 3 to 4 weeks, gradually fading in the second month, with a few cases extending to 10 weeks before complete resolution. After stopping breastfeeding for 3 to 4 days, the jaundice may significantly decrease. If breastfeeding is resumed, the jaundice may not reappear, or if it does, it will not reach the previous level.
