Question

My daughter is over four years old and she wets the bed multiple times every night. I want to know what the cause might be? She has never received any treatment, and what kind of help do I need?

Answer

Generally, children between 3 and 4 years old should start to control their urination. However, if a child still frequently wets the bed (more than twice a week, continuously for 6 months) after the age of 5 or 6, this is known as ’enuresis’. Your daughter is still within the normal range at four years old. It is recommended to start cultivating the habit of her using the toilet independently before bedtime. You can ask her to silently recite ‘I will get up to urinate at a certain time tonight’ before going to bed. Parents can also wake her up before she usually wets the bed, allowing her to urinate while awake. Additionally, reducing the intake of salt, water, and soup during dinner can also help improve nighttime bedwetting.
