Question

Should I supplement calcium while breastfeeding? If so, when is the best time to start?

Answer

Premature infants should start calcium supplementation two weeks after birth, while full-term infants can begin after one month. It is recommended to continue supplementation until around 2 or 3 years of age. When supplementing calcium, attention should be paid to its absorption. Adequate intake of vitamin D helps with the absorption and utilization of calcium. Exposing children to sunlight outdoors is a natural way to supplement vitamin D, but remember that direct sunlight is needed as UV rays cannot penetrate glass. Additionally, since the baby’s gastrointestinal system is not fully developed, it may also affect calcium absorption.
