Question

Every day at around 5 or 6 PM, my baby cries for no apparent reason, and nothing seems to comfort them. It stops after this time. Is it possible that my baby is suffering from calcium deficiency? I currently give him one vitamin AD tablet a day. Do I need to supplement with calcium as well? Or what kind of calcium should I give? How should I feed it to such a young child?

Answer

The baby’s condition is likely due to calcium deficiency. Since young children grow rapidly and have limited outdoor activities and sun exposure, they often experience insufficient calcium absorption, leading to various symptoms of calcium deficiency. Common symptoms include excessive sweating, unrelated to temperature, especially during sleep when the head sweats excessively, causing the baby to constantly rub their head against the pillow, eventually leading to a bald spot at the back of the head. Nightmares are also common, with the baby often waking up suddenly and crying. It is recommended to administer calcium supplements, along with vitamin AD drops, and ensure plenty of outdoor sun exposure. You can also add calcium carbonate granules that can be mixed with water for feeding with a bottle.
