Question
What causes pediatric epilepsy?
Answer
Conditions such as congenital malformations, including chromosomal abnormalities and congenital hydrocephalus, can lead to the recurrence of pediatric epilepsy. Diseases during the prenatal and perinatal periods, such as birth injuries, are common causes of symptomatic epilepsy in infancy. Injuries, edema, and skin breaks can lead to regional brain sclerosis, which years later forms a focus. The sequelae of high fever seizures can be severe and persistent high fever seizures that cause neuronal damage and gliotic fibrosis in the brain, thereby leading to epilepsy.
