Question

My daughter is three and a half months old, and her stool has contained bubbles for the past few days, about 2 or 3 times a day. Sometimes when she farts, some bubbles come out as well. What’s going on? I bought some Crotamiton granules, but haven’t given them to her yet. Is this serious? Do I need to see a doctor? She hasn’t been sick before.

Answer

Hello: I’m glad to clarify your concerns. A small amount of mucus in normal stool is often not noticeable because it is evenly mixed with the stool. If visible mucus is present, it indicates that the amount has significantly increased, which is known as mucous stools. If there is an increase in bowel movements, along with mucous stools and symptoms of urgent need to defecate, consider the following points: 1. The patient may have inflammation of the rectum or colon, with complex causes. 2. If there is enteritis, the stool is not yet formed, so mucus easily mixes with the stool. If it’s colitis, as the stool gradually forms, mucus is not easily mixed with the stool.
