Question
Lately, my baby drinks milk unhappily. I don’t know why. They want to drink but throw up after a few sips, then they’re eager to drink again. They arch their back and twist their head while drinking, but this doesn’t happen when they breastfeed. My milk supply is low, so I have to add formula. I’ve checked their mouth and there are no problems like thrush or ulcers, and the milk isn’t too hot or too cold. I suspect it might be an abdominal issue, but they’ve been drinking mom’s love milk all along, and they seem to have a bit of an upset stomach with a small pimple under the chin and a rash-like appearance on their face. I’ve been washing them promptly to prevent the rash from worsening. They eat more calmly when they’re very hungry. Here’s the basic situation. Can you tell me why my baby behaves this way? Thank you in advance for the expert advice.
Answer
- It’s possible that your baby has had gastrointestinal illness, leading to incomplete recovery of gastrointestinal function and digestive problems.
- Babies’ stomachs and throats are not fully developed yet, making it easy for them to swallow air while eating. Here are some methods to try and improve the situation:
- Ensure that your baby’s mouth completely covers the nipple or bottle nipple during feeding to prevent air from entering.
- If using a bottle, make sure the milk is filled in the nipple completely, avoiding too fast or too slow milk flow. If these methods do not work, it is recommended to visit the hospital for a check-up to rule out other potential issues.
