Question

My baby has started eating only breast milk and not cow’s milk since one and a half months old. My milk supply is simply not enough for him. However, he would rather starve than drink cow’s milk. He can only take up to 30 milliliters, and now a month has passed, he has lost a little weight compared to when he was born. What should I do if I feel he is getting thinner?

Answer

This is an issue where the baby is initially adjusting back to breast milk and is reacting negatively to formula milk. Different babies have varying times for understanding new foods, with some taking just one or two days, while others may need up to five or six days. Therefore, patience is key, allowing the baby multiple exposures to new foods so they can practice defecation methods and regain their taste. Sometimes the baby may eat and then spit out, but one must not mistakenly assume that the baby does not accept the food. If you persist, this situation may resolve itself. It may take the baby 8 to 10 attempts to understand a new food. Of course, the same goes for the baby understanding formula milk; it needs to be approached gradually.
