Question
What are the hazards of pediatric X-ray exams?
Answer
It is generally not recommended for children to undergo X-ray imaging unless it is absolutely necessary. In the past, it was believed that not doing it too frequently would not cause any interference. The sensitivity to radiation varies from person to person, as does the interference. Interference may not manifest immediately and could appear later on. X-rays primarily affect the body through ionizing and biological effects, which can interfere with cell differentiation and growth. Children are more sensitive to the gonads and crystalline lens, but interference is generally only apparent during the exposure; these harmful cells will be oxidized or decomposed, and the body will regenerate new normal cells over time.
