Question
My child is now 54 days old and has recurrent jaundice. I’m curious about the cause. What was the treatment situation and outcome in the past? My child has undergone phototherapy and I hope to seek help for the treatment of jaundice.
Answer
Jaundice refers to hyperbilirubinemia, a condition characterized by elevated levels of bilirubin in the blood, leading to yellowing of the skin, mucous membranes, and other tissues. When the serum bilirubin concentration is between 17.1 and 34.2 micromoles per liter (1 to 2 milligrams per deciliter), it is considered subclinical jaundice even if jaundice is not visible to the naked eye. Bilirubin levels below 34.2 micromoles per liter (2 milligrams per deciliter) are considered clinical jaundice. General treatment includes management of risk factors and the use of symptomatic treatment drugs such as enzyme inducers.
