Question
Why do premature babies sometimes develop symptoms of intravascular coagulopathy after a few days in the incubator, even though their blood tests were normal at birth?
Answer
Neonatal intravascular coagulopathy is caused by a variety of different factors and is one of the leading causes of neonatal death. Treatment methods include actively treating the primary disease, transfusing fresh plasma and platelets, and performing lysis therapy to replenish sufficient coagulation factors and platelets, as well as to clear toxins and fibrinolytic products from the primary disease.
