Question

My child is 16 months old and, so far, can only say ‘mommy,’ occasionally ‘daddy,’ and nothing else. She is very smart, she understands everything adults say, and she’s very clear about it, but she just won’t talk. Is this situation normal? Hi, what could be the reason…

Answer

If the child can understand and articulate, it proves that there are no significant problems with her hearing and language function. Delayed speech may be related to the guidance and teaching from parents.

  1. Intentionally talk more to the child and Deliberate imitation. For example, have the child sit on your lap, point at an apple while making the sound, let the child touch your lips and nose, then say ‘apple.’ If the child says it correctly, give some small rewards.
  2. Delay the enjoyment of the child’s suggestions as much as possible, giving the item after they speak.
  3. Combine the child’s speaking with games, like ‘Baby Catch the Ball’; when dressing the child every day, say things like ‘Baby stretch your arms,’ ‘Can your feet come out?’ to help the child associate their feet, arms, and legs.
  4. Create a social environment with other children. Children of similar ages playing together is both fun and allows them to practice communication.
  5. Consider enrolling the child in an early education class to systematically promote and train various abilities.
