Question

What are the causes of pediatric optic nerve atrophy?

Answer

Optic nerve atrophy is not a name for a disease, but rather a symptom that arises from pathological changes in retinal ganglion cells and their axons. Treatment of the underlying cause is the primary concern. Once optic nerve atrophy occurs, it is almost impossible to heal it, but it is possible to maintain and restore the function of residual nerve fibers. Therefore, patients should maintain confidence and persist with treatment. Due to the lack of rigorous double-blind trials (and sometimes the prohibition of such trials), it is difficult to say which medications and methods are definitely effective.
