Question

When is the most appropriate time to conduct a newborn hearing screening?

Answer

Newborn hearing screening (NHS) is recommended to be conducted during the hospital stay after birth, typically between 2 to 5 days after birth. The results will be categorized into two types: passed the screening and not passed the screening. Newborns who do not pass the screening should undergo a re-screening within 42 days after birth. If they still do not pass, they should be referred to specialized hearing diagnostic centers for diagnostic auditory testing and evaluation to determine if there is a hearing impairment and its extent and nature. Infants diagnosed with hearing impairment should receive intervention recommendations within 6 months.
