Question
Baby has a chalazion on the left eye. Initially, after using eye ointment, eye drops, and cold compresses, the swelling subsided. However, a few days later, it recurred. What are the potential effects of continued cold compresses without surgery? Can baby eat egg yolks at this stage?
Answer
When the abscess reappears, do not squeeze it with your hands, as the eyelid has abundant blood vessels. The veins of the eye are connected to the orbital veins and also to the cavernous sinus within the skull. The eye veins lack valves, allowing blood to flow in all directions. Squeezing can cause inflammation to spread, leading to serious complications such as orbital cellulitis, cavernous sinus thrombosis, or even sepsis, which can be life-threatening. Do not rub your eyes with dirty hands to avoid introducing bacteria and causing infection. Apply gentamicin eye ointment after the baby falls asleep when an abscess appears.
