Question

My younger sister has had two consecutive months of health checks, and her head circumference has not increased. Will this affect her intellectual growth and development? Should we supplement anything?

Answer

Your child’s head circumference is smaller, but this alone cannot determine whether their intelligence development is affected. Head circumference size is influenced by genetics and brain development, so it’s recommended to regularly measure head circumference to monitor brain development. At the same time, intelligence assessments can be conducted to understand the status of intellectual development. Typically, children with microcephaly have small, pointed heads, narrow foreheads, and may experience physical and intellectual delays, and some may also have epilepsy symptoms. Although your baby’s head circumference is slightly smaller, this does not necessarily indicate that intelligence development is affected. A comprehensive evaluation is needed.
