Question
What to do for children with cerebral palsy?
Answer
The treatment of cerebral palsy should be comprehensive, not relying on a single method to resolve all the issues for patients with cerebral palsy. Currently, there are several methods used to treat cerebral palsy:
- Surgical Therapy: Once abnormal posture and movement associated with cerebral palsy appear, especially when unable to stand or walk, surgical treatment is required. For children with spastic cerebral palsy, surgery may improve limb function. The principle of surgical treatment is to reduce spasms, restore and improve muscle strength balance, correct muscle, joint, or skeletal contractures, and create conditions for functional recovery.
- Medication Therapy: Modern medicine generally does not recommend medication treatment for cerebral palsy. Medications can be used to treat accompanying symptoms and complications associated with cerebral palsy.
