Question

During the acute or recovery phase of hand, foot, and mouth disease, what dietary precautions should children pay attention to? If blisters appear, what topical medications can be applied?

Answer

During the acute phase of hand, foot, and mouth disease, if symptoms such as low fever or no fever, runny nose, cough, sore throat, or loss of appetite are present, the “Yin Qiao San” formula can be used for treatment. If high fever persists, and there are dense blisters on the mouth, hands, buttocks, and limbs, consider using the “Qing Wen Bai Du Yin” formula. For children with complications such as persistent high fever and frequent coughing, the “Yi Jiao Xiang He Shen Fu Tang” formula can be used. During the recovery phase of the disease, for children with dry mouth and throat, Shashen Maidong Decoction can be supplemented with raw rehmannia and lu gen to nourish yin and moisten throat. If blisters appear in the child’s mouth, any of the following topical medications can be applied to the affected area: Shuangxiang San, Bing Peng San, or Xin Lai San. For severe cases of hand and foot blisters, Ruyi Jinyang San or Qingdai San can be used after being mixed with sesame oil and applied to the affected area.
