Question
After the baby’s lacrimal duct clearance, there are still tears and discharge. Is this normal and how should it be handled?
Answer
Babies’ lacrimal ducts mature and begin to produce tears approximately 2 to 1 month after birth. If there is excessive discharge and redness in the eyes, it may be due to a blocked nasolacrimal duct or infection causing dacryocystitis. It is recommended to observe for any other symptoms. If the symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical attention promptly. At the same time, pay attention to the baby’s eye hygiene to prevent infection. If it’s just excessive tearing, it may be a normal phenomenon, but eye cleanliness should still be maintained. If the baby is breastfed, the mother should be mindful of her diet, avoiding spicy and greasy foods.
