Question

My child, who is three years old, has been coughing for a long time. Does the coughing get worse at night? He also has a purulent runny nose. Previous treatment and its effects: Not very ideal. I’m looking for help: What kind of method can effectively treat my child’s cough?

Answer

  1. Drink small amounts of water frequently, avoiding very hot water to prevent irritation of the throat;
  2. When the baby has a severe cough, it’s best to hold them up and position their upper body at a 45-degree angle. Gently pat the baby’s back with your hand to help loosen mucus that is stuck in the airways, making it easier for them to cough it out;
  3. Always maintain a comfortable air temperature. The temperature and cleanliness are crucial. The room temperature should ideally be kept around 20-26°C, with regular ventilation. The indoor humidity should be between 50% and 70% to help dissolve phlegm and facilitate coughing. Dry air makes it difficult for phlegm to be released as it sticks to the walls of the airways.
