Question

My newborn’s right eye is tearing and has eye discharge. Could it be due to heat? Previous treatment and effectiveness: I haven’t seen a doctor yet, I’m looking for assistance: Provide treatment methods. If it’s due to heat, why isn’t the left eye affected? So it’s not due to heat. Instead, consider the possibility of having dacryocystitis or duct obstruction.

Answer

I suggest giving the child a lacrimal sac massage first. The method is: use your thumb to gently press from the inner corner of the eye along the bridge of the nose upwards, slightly applying pressure to the nostril, five times a day, each time five strokes. It’s best to drop eye drops first, then perform the massage, as this can help the eye drops reach the lacrimal sac. I faintly remember that you must make sure your nails are clean. If there is no effect from the lacrimal sac massage, I recommend performing a lacrimal duct probing procedure when the child is three months old, as at this age, the child’s lacrimal puncta are large enough for cleaning and probing, and the struggle is not too strong. If you wait until the child is older, it will be more difficult to perform the probing.
