Question

My child is 5 years old and has been intermittently coughing for over 3 months. The cough is dry with no phlegm, and they have started to have a slight fever. They have had injections and taken quite a lot of medicine, the fever has subsided, but the cough has not healed on its own, and they often have a runny nose and rub their nose. I’m not sure what the cause is? Previous treatment and effects: We have seen a doctor, who said it’s a cough caused by rhinitis, and prescribed medicine for 10 days. The symptoms improved while taking the medicine, but as soon as we stopped, the cough started again. We are worried about the dependence on the medicine. What kind of help can we expect?

Answer

In this case, it might be considered a high airway reflex, which is an airway allergy. Additionally, with symptoms such as rubbing their nose and forehead, these are indicative of cough variant asthma. In such cases, nebulizer treatment with budesonide should be considered, using two milliliters at a time, twice a day. Alternatively, leukotriene modifiers can be used for one month.
